I have been going through quite a few discussions on the net where the word 'leader' has been liberally used for almost anything to do with management. It's common to describe people like Gandhi, Washington, Steve Jobbs, Nelson Mandela etc., as leaders and there are no controversies seen in calling them so. However, there is also a sect of intellectuals that seems to take cues of leadership from the likes of Attila, Chengiz Khan, Hitler, Mao etc., Strategists, Philosophers, Thinkers, Scientists, Politicians, Great Warriors etc., are all clubbed together with one word 'leader'. Is it their appealing image is making us to hallucinate them as leaders?.
While there is no globally agreed definition for leader, the most attracted one for me comes from Dr. Stephen Covey. I thought it may be a good idea to post a cheat sheet as a tool to quickly differentiate between a leader and a manager. One can self-assess his/her own qualities.
